Arbor Day in South Carolina is always the first Friday of December and the York Soil & Water Conservation District would like to help schools use this observance to teach students the value of trees in our environment.  We are offering two different programs to schools in York County:

• Plant a tree on school grounds. The Conservation District will provide a tree and assistance in planning a ceremony to involve students in the tree-planting and commemorating of Arbor Day (songs, poems, etc.) To participate, teachers should submit an essay stating in 200 words or less what Arbor Day means to their school, why they should be selected and how the students will be involved in the observance.   The Conservation District will select up to three schools to receive this tree grant.

OR

• Request a guest-speaker presentation for your students on the value of trees in our environment. Presentations will be scheduled during the period of December 1–14 and can be requested for a single class or entire grade level. Each student will receive a tree seedling to take home for planting. To request a program, teachers should submit a short essay stating how this program will benefit students and relate to their curriculum standards.

Deadline for submitting your essay or program request is October 31. Please submit by email to yorkswcoordinator@gmail.com or by mail to York Soil & Water Conservation District, 1460 E Alexander Love Hwy, York, SC 29745. All who apply will be contacted for further information or to work out the details.
